WordPress 5.8 is available for download now, and it has the usual fresh batch of new features. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s new:
WordPress 5.8 is now available for download, bringing a host of new features and bug fixes to your WordPress site. Most of these enhancements will be available for all WordPress sites, but there are some that are only available to the Multi-Site Premium and Developer plans.
WordPress 5.8 is here, for better or worse. There are some great new features in the upcoming release of WordPress 5.8, from new block settings, to the ability to easily add images and videos in posts, to the visual editor’s new options for image cropping and color settings. Finally, WordPress 5.8 “Tatum” is a new version of WordPress. was launched today, July 21, 2021, and is ready for download. Since the advent of the WordPress block editor (AKA Gutenberg) in WordPress 5.0, this is the eighth major release. WebP format support, Block-Based Widgets Editor, expanded usability of PHP security tool, a ‘Update URI’ header for plugin writers, various REST API enhancements, developer upgrades, and more are all included in this version of WordPress 5.8 “Tatum.”
Note: PHP 5.6.20 is now the minimum version required to run WordPress 5.8. That implies you’ll need to update PHP before upgrading to WordPress 5.8 if you’re running an older version.
WordPress 5.8 “Tatum”
The name “Tatum” was chosen in honor of great jazz pianist Art Tatum.

- The WordPress Dashboard informs you that WordPress 5.8 is now available.
- To install WordPress 5.8, simply click the “please update now” link.

- Then, to get the WP 5.8 update, click the “Update Now” option.
- Your site will be in maintenance mode while it is being updated.
- Your site will return to normal as soon as your updates are finished.

WebP pictures are now supported by WordPress.
With the release of WordPress 5.8, the most popular CMS platform now supports WebP pictures, allowing you to upload and use them natively within any theme.
Google created WebP, a new(ish) image file format. It has lossless and lossy compression that saves between 25% and 34% of the space of similar PNGs or JPEGs.
Template editor has been updated.
The new template editor, or one of the first Full Site Editing tools accessible in the post editor, allows you to create, assign, and edit block templates to particular posts and pages in WordPress 5.8.

There’s a new List View panel that lets you examine the arrangement and hierarchy of blocks in greater detail, making it easier to keep track of everything.
- Text, background, and link colors can all be customized.
- Padding between columns can now be adjusted.
- Table blocks now have a gradient background option.
